Current recommendations for COVID-19

Stay home if you have newly arisen respiratory tract symptoms and feel unwell. You no longer need to be tested, and you do not need to stay home for four days with COVID-19. Contact a
doctor if you need medical attention. Testing will be available for a while longer.

On Tuesday 5 April, the Government removed the advice to stay at home for four days after COVID-19.

Updated recommendations
The current COVID-19 recommendations are:

  • Stay at home if you feel unwell and avoid contact with people at risk of a severe COVID-19 disease course if you have newly arisen respiratory tract symptoms.
  • You do not need to stay at home for 4 days.
  • Contact a doctor if you need medical attention.
  • You do not need to take a self-test. If you have a positive test result, the same advice applies to stay at home if you feel unwell.
  • You do not need to register positive self-test results with your municipality.
  • There are separate recommendations for those who have an increased risk of a severe COVID-19 disease course - Risk groups and their relatives (fhi.no).
  • See more about: Newly-arisen respiratory tract symptoms, COVID-19 testing and positive test results (fhi.no).

Self-tests will still be available
For a transitional period, self-tests will be available in the municipalities for people who still want to be tested. The advice for positive and negative test results is the same; stay home if you feel unwell.

Test centres will continue
The municipality will continue to operate test centres for a while longer for people who need to document having COVID-19 or for a negative test for the COVID-19 certificate. In general, such testing will not be provided by a family doctor or out-of-hours medical service.

Why have the measures been removed?
The omicron variant causes less severe COVID-19 disease course than previous variants of the virus, and many people are now either vaccinated or have had COVID-19. This means that most people are now well protected against a severe disease course.
The winter wave of COVID-19 seems to be declining in Norway. It is no longer necessary to limit transmission as before. It is now sufficient that people stay at home when they feel unwell.
